Why Do I Need This Training?

Asbestos is a heat and fire resistant mineral that was commonly used in building materials like flooring, ceilings, roofing and industrial systems insulation. Asbestos is a Document ID: 20241010.REF Norpro H&S Asbestos Training Course Descriptions Issued On: 10/10/2024 Revision Date: highly toxic material that can cause a multitude of severe health effects including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. An owner is obligated to institute and maintain a training program for those workers who may work with or who may disturb asbestos containing materials during the course of their work. An occupier who receives a written notice of the presence of asbestos in the area they occupy must develop and maintain a similar training program for his or her workers.


When Do I Require This Training?

The Occupational Health & Safety Act requires employers to make workers aware of the hazards in their workplace and take every reasonable precaution in the circumstances for the protection of the worker.


If you are an employer or a worker at a workplace where asbestos containing materials are present this course will educate you on how to identify potential asbestos containing materials, as well as how to navigate the legislation to appropriately classify asbestos operations.


Who Should Attend?
  • Any workers, including construction tradespeople, who work in environments where they may encounter asbestos containing products in their work.
  • Supervisors of workers who may encounter asbestos containing products in their work.
  • Individuals who contract out work on asbestos containing materials.
  • Health and Safety Professionals and Joint Health and Safety Committee members looking to expand their knowledge.

Please Note: the scope of this course does not include the requirements for performing Type 1, 2 or 3 asbestos operations. What Will Be Covered?

This course will include training focused on:


  • Asbestos properties, types and applications.
  • Health effects of asbestos exposure.
  • Asbestos Legislation (Ontario Regulation 278/05).
  • Classifying Asbestos Operations (Class 1, 2 and 3).

The course will also include completion of program worksheets and practical exercises around interpretation of the legislation and identification of asbestos containing products.

Each course participant will receive:


  • Participant guide including course slides with areas for note taking.
  • Program worksheets to complete in class.

Will I Receive a Certificate?

At the end of the training, a performance evaluation (multiple choice test) will be administered to determine the comprehension and information retention level of the participant. Participants will also be asked to complete program worksheets during the course to assist in evaluating content retention. There is no pass/fail criteria assigned to this program. As such, all participants will be issued a certificate/wallet card acknowledging completion provided by Norpro H&S.
